Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. (James 4:8)

You are as close to God as you want to be.

That’s a powerful statement, isn’t it? It means that God is always there for us, waiting for us to come to him. He doesn’t want to be distant from us. He wants to be close to us.

But how do we get close to God?

1. Seek him.

The first step is to seek God. We need to desire to be close to him. We need to want to know him more.

The Bible says, “Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you” (James 4:8). When we seek God, he will meet us.

2. Spend time with him.

The best way to get close to someone is to spend time with them. The same is true with God. The more time we spend with him, the closer we will become to him.

We can spend time with God by reading the Bible, praying, and worshiping him. We can also spend time with him by serving others and sharing his love with the world.

3. Be obedient to him.

When we obey God, we are showing him that we love him and that we trust him. Obedience is a sign of intimacy.

The Bible says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). When we obey God, we are drawing closer to him.

4. Trust him.

Trust is essential in any relationship. It is also essential in our relationship with God.

The Bible says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). When we trust God, we are drawing closer to him.

5. Be patient.

It takes time to build any relationship, including our relationship with God. We need to be patient as we grow closer to him.

The Bible says, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen” (2 Peter 3:18). As we grow in our faith, we will draw closer to God.

Conclusion

God wants to be close to us. He has already made the first move by sending his Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. Now it’s our turn to respond.

We can respond by seeking him, spending time with him, being obedient to him, trusting him, and being patient.

As we do these things, we will draw closer to God and experience his love and grace in a new way.
